At NewsBank, Domain Architects coordinate and manage our technology strategy, architecture, and designs for the NewsBank’s product platform and web applications. Our massive and diverse content set includes newspapers, videos, books, government documents, maps, and more, from all over the world spanning hundreds of years. NewsBank’s web applications help a broad range of users and partners worldwide to access that content and leverage it for their needs, be it academic research, genealogical research, philanthropic giving, tracking trends, or simply keeping up with the news. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define the architectural vision and technical roadmap for the NewsBank product platform, considering scalability, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Architect and design modular, reusable components and APIs that facilitate reusability, agility, and scale within the NewsBank product platform.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate technologies, frameworks, and architectural patterns to support our long-term technical strategy.
  • Establish and enforce standards, best practices, and architectural guidelines to ensure consistency and quality across software development efforts.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Lead architectural and design discussions and collaborate with engineers, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Responsible for building effective relationships with stakeholders and peers, as well as representing team & product needs in significant and / or cross-team initiatives.
  • Responsible for assessing web technology trends and making informed recommendations on investments (adoption, exploration, training, consultation, etc.); as well as championing and advocating for critical areas of change.
  • Stay up to date with software technology trends (designs, patterns, frameworks, and new/emerging technologies)

Qualifications

  • Highly skilled Software Architect with a proven track record of architecting, designing and developing web application software solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • At least 8 years’ experience in the software development field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a Software Architect, Domain Architect or Principal Engineer, with a track record of architecting and delivering complex web application designs and architectures.
  • Deep understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, and architectural styles. Ability to envision and plan for long-term architectural needs aligned with platform goals.
  • Strong proficiency in multiple programming languages
  • Modern Web Application Development experience, targeting JavaScript/TypeScript development ecosystems. Node, React, Angular, Nest and associated tools.
  • Expertise with microservice / service-oriented architectures and designs, tools and frameworks is required.
  • Expertise in cloud computing platforms (specifically AWS) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Amazon ECS).
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ability to communicate and advocate for technology change when required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing complex technical challenges.
  • Works and communicates effectively with developers and development leadership.
  • Works extremely well with other related teams, both technical and non-technical – User Experience, Customer Service, Product Owners, Quality Control, Technical Operations, etc.
  • Experience with large scale information retrieval is desired.
  • Experience with educational software or library software is a plus.
